March in Maryland has most of us itching to get outside. The browns and grays of winter are starting to give way to green grass, buds on the trees, and the yellow, purple, and white of the first spring flowers are making an appearance. If 2020 is the year to revamp your landscape (or to start thinking about it), we have some landscape design trends for 2020 you may be interested in.
The overarching trend seems to be custom landscaping that makes it all about you. And we think that’s as it should be. Your personal style and aesthetics shine through, from the colors and patterns you use in your hardscape elements to the plants, trees, and shrubs you choose.
Do it your way. Any good landscape designer will take your ideas and their expertise to create the landscape of your dreams.
More and more people are incorporating ornate details such as scrolls, waves, lattice, chevron, and basketweave designs into walkways, archways, and patios. Porcelain tiles and natural stone are very popular. Different color pavers and stone can be used to create geometric patterns in retaining walls, stairs, and outdoor fireplaces.
Baby boomers, GenXers, and millennials alike are asking for sleek, contemporary, and simple landscape designs. This includes elegant yet functional outdoor kitchens, fire pits, and water features. And people want to use their outdoor living space in every season. This can mean installing an outdoor fireplace, having a covered patio, utilizing native plants that give visual interest in all four seasons, and more.
Pantone named the 2020 color of the year Classic Blue. PPG Paints chose Chinese Porcelain, a cobalt blue. And Sherwin-Williams chose Naval, a dark blue. You can stay on trend by adding blue accessories such as plant pots, pillows, cushions, mosaic tile, and more. To add a touch of blue to your gardens, hydrangea, delphinium, glove thistle, and grape hyacinth are all good choices.
Homeowners simply don’t want to waste time watering the lawn or the garden. Enter smart, remote control irrigation. These new systems track the weather and only come on automatically when it’s dry out. You conserve water and save money. You can also control your system from anywhere with a smartphone app.
Get the landscape design you want and deserve by hiring a reputable landscape design company. You can do this by asking friends, family, and coworkers for suggestions. Then thoroughly review the company websites. How long have they been in business? Do they do the upscale landscape design you’re looking for? Do they offer a seamless design/build process? Look for landscape designers who also build the hardscape elements you want. Once you’ve narrowed your choices down to 2 or 3, set up your consultations.
Then choose who you want to work with. And enjoy the process! We’re sure the end result will be spectacular.
