Wow. Seems like there’s a national day for everything. If you’ve never heard of National Goof Off Day, you work too hard! It all started with a 10-year-old child. Monica Dufour of Davidson, MI founded National Goof Off Day. Dufour is the granddaughter of Chases’ Calendar of Events creator William D. Chase.
Here’s the story: In 1976, when she was 10, Monica was apparently goofing off and called in to a radio interview her grandfather was doing. He was asking people to call in with suggestions for the calendar. She disguised her voice and suggested a Goof Off Day. The next day, she confessed to her grandfather what she had done. He then showed her that day’s local newspaper, which had heartily endorsed the idea. The rest, as they say, is history.
Even if you can’t take the whole day off, we do hope you’ll take some time to be silly, do something fun, or just take a nap. Remember those?
For the team here at LiveWell Outdoors, our favorite goof off activity is, well, getting outdoors. We just feel better when we’re outside.
And, research shows there are many health and wellness benefits to being outside, including:
And it turns out just 20 minutes outside can improve wellbeing. We’re sold!
If you’re like a lot of people, you’re working from home during the pandemic. If you’re still going into work, take the outdoor tour of your property the next time the weather allows.
Walk down the driveway and look at your property from the street. We know it’s March, so there may not be a lot of color yet. But think about what you would like to do to upgrade your curb appeal. Do your trees, shrubs, and garden beds look to be in good shape? Is it time to upgrade your landscape design?
Now move closer to your home. How is your driveway holding up? What about the sidewalks? Is it time to consider replacing the asphalt and concrete with a paver driveway and walkways?
Next, walk around to the back yard. Does your deck or patio need an upgrade? Is 2021 the year to add an inground pool, outdoor kitchen, or both? Think about how much more time you and your family would spend outdoors if you improved your outdoor living space.
You would all reap the health benefits of being outdoors, and you might decrease screen time as well. It’s a win-win.
We hope you enjoy your day! And if you do take an inventory of your immediate outdoor surroundings and find them lacking, set up a consultation. We create distinctive outdoor living spaces for clients in Maryland, DC, and northern Virginia.
If you can dream it, we can build it.
