The days are getting warmer (and longer!), which means it’s time to get your patio and outdoor living spaces ready for entertaining. While weather this time of year can be unpredictable, as long as you keep an eye on the long-range forecast, you should be able to easily follow these tips to bring some life back into your outdoor spaces.
Take this time to do some exterior cleaning. This includes:
Take the covers off your patio furniture, or take it out of storage. If it’s in good shape, new cushions or throw pillows in fun spring colors may be all you need to update it. But if it looks worse for wear even after cleaning, consider buying some new patio furniture or at the very least, new cushions.

An indoor/outdoor rug really ties your main patio seating area together, giving it the feel of an outdoor living room. If you put one in storage, bring it out and hose it down to help it look its best. Or, take this opportunity to get a new rug, especially if you’re getting new patio furniture or cushions.
Clear flower beds of leaves and debris. This will let spring bulbs and perennials come up without difficulty. Pull any winter weeds. Wait to add new mulch (if needed) until everything has sprouted and is a few inches above the ground. Follow a spring lawn care regimen, including the application of a crabgrass preventer.
If you put them in storage, bring out your planters. Or, buy some new ones this year. They’re an inexpensive way to update your patio and your front entry. Buy some plants that can withstand a little cold, such as pansies, violas, violets, and primrose.
Now is also a good time to make sure you have plenty of fuel for the fire pit and gas grill. Because as the sun stays up longer, you’re going to want to make the most of your time outside, and the evenings can still be chilly.
