Gather ‘Round the Firepit

Labor Day weekend is traditionally the end of summer. The evening temperatures start to get cooler, and it’s a great time to be outside. We like to gather round the firepit this time of year. This fall, we may do it while social distancing, but it can still be very enjoyable. We’d like to share some of our favorite firepit party ideas with you.

1.  S’mores Party

Kids and adults of all ages will love gathering around the firepit to enjoy the gooey goodness of toasted marshmallows, melted chocolate, and graham crackers.

Stay traditional with the original recipe or get creative by providing your guests with a variety of add-on ingredients. Set up stations where people can go through each step of the process.

Long skewers with handles and wet wipes for cleanup are a must.

2.  Family Game Night

Instead of board games, in this age of social distancing, consider charades or games like Pictionary, where you don’t have to sit close together and touch the same board. Use a big whiteboard for Pictionary. You can also play talking games such as 20 Questions2 Truths and a Lie, etc.

Be sure to have plenty of snacks and drinks available. Individual servings or individually packaged snacks and drinks are best right now.

3.  A Wine Tasting Party

OK, this one is for adults only, and it’s a great chance to try out some new wines. 4-6 wines is a suitable amount. Be sure to have wine glasses with wine glass charms, so your guests always know which glass is theirs.

Before your guests arrive, space out the seating, and at each seat, place the wine glass, spittoon, wine information printout, pen, and paper. With each wine, asks guests to make notes about what they like/dislike about the wine, and everyone can compare notes afterward.

To make it extra fun, consider removing the labels from the wine bottles and have your guests see if they can match each wine sample to the information printout you provided. Or have the guests wear blindfolds during the tasting.

Be sure to provide some sort of food, such as fruit, bread, and cheese, to help guests soak up all that wine.

4.  Outdoor Movie Night

One of our favorite firepit party ideas is movie night! The hardest part might be choosing one that everyone can agree on. So, start by choosing a movie based on the age of your guests. Kids attending your movie night? Here’s a list of the best family movies from Common Sense Media.

Unless you have a big screen TV on your patio, you will need:

  • A projector
  • A screen, or a white sheet
  • A laptop with speakers
  • Movie snacks individually packaged

Keep the firepit lit to help people stay warm, arrange chairs, blankets, and pillows to help everyone get comfy for the show.

5.  Name That Tune

This is an especially fun activity around your outdoor firepit if you have a guest who either is a good singer, or who can play just about anything on the guitar. Play as individuals, or divide up into teams and see who can guess the song first.

You can also play this game where each person sings or plays their own song. That can be a little less musical, but hilarious! If someone is singing, be sure that they are at least 6 feet away from your other guests.

Consider Professional Firepit Installation

If you want a permanent firepit, rather than a portable one, you may want to consider hiring professional outdoor living experts like LiveWell Outdoors. While some firepit kits are cheap and easy to install, they’re just that – cheaply made. We build our firepits with top quality materials, and we can run the gas line if you choose to have a gas firepit. We’d be happy to schedule a consultation.
