Small Deck Ideas that Pack a Punch

Bigger isn’t necessarily better. This is true in so many things in life, and your deck is no exception. Just because you have a tiny yard doesn’t mean you can’t have a luxury outdoor living space, thanks to a custom deck. Below, we’ve included some of our favorite small deck ideas that pack a punch.

Small Deck Idea #1: Use High-End Decking Materials

One of the best ways to ensure that your small deck makes a statement is to use high-end decking materials. If you have a high-end home, you don’t want to ruin the aesthetic with an ordinary deck made with pressure-treated lumber.

Consider using exotic hardwoods such as Ipe (pronounced “ee-pay”) or Tigerwood. Or opt for a luxurious but low-maintenance composite decking such as Fiberon. Choose colors and styles that will work with your home to provide a cohesive look and feel.

Small Deck Idea #2: Install Built-In Bench Seating

Patio furniture can be big and bulky. Maintain order and give guests a place to sit with built-in bench seating around the perimeter of your small deck. The bottom can offer cabinet-style storage where you can keep throw pillows, blankets, and dining items when they’re not in use.

Small Deck Idea #3: Create the Illusion of a Bigger Space

Did you know that instead of placing deck planks or panels parallel or perpendicular to your home, you can make a small deck look larger by installing diagonal deck panels? This elongates the space, creating the illusion that the deck is bigger than it is. Of course, if your deck is going to be a lot longer than it is wide, you would want the planks to run the length of the deck.

Deck railing ideas for a small deck include using cable-style railings to give the deck a more open feel while maintaining safety.

Small Deck Idea #4: Add a Spiral Staircase from the Upper Level

As well as having a door on your first level that opens onto your deck, consider adding a spiral staircase that connects your upper level and your deck. With an open and airy design, a spiral staircase can make the most of the space you have. It also adds a touch of elegance and style.

Small Deck Idea #5: Think Vertical

Another way to make your small deck seem larger is to include one or more vertical focal points. Consider adding a trellis for climbing vines or sheer curtains to provide privacy.

You can also create a vertical garden on the wall of your home for added interest. These are both popular deck privacy ideas as well. And when you’re on a small lot close to neighbors, privacy is at a premium.
